A branch of health tourism in which a person travels from an advanced country to the rest of the world to benefit from the medical services of the country of destination. In most cases, the goal of medical tourism is to take advantage of the low cost of medical services or faster service delivery elsewhere in the world.

Medical tourism is different from regular medical trips. On ordinary trips, a person from a less developed country travels to receive advanced medical services, due to the lack of similar services in own country while medical tourism provides medical services to tourists of other countries.

As defined by the World Tourism Organization, medical tourism means travel for the treatment of physical illness or for the conduct of a surgical procedure under the supervision of doctors in hospitals or medical centers. Medical tourism is one of the subcategories of health tourism. This kind of travel became commonplace from the early 1990s, for various reasons such as globalization and trade liberalization, exchange rate changes in the economy, due to the popularity of Asian countries in this regard and the economic crises in the Asian region (which has led to more attention to this industry). Price is one of the main factors in the success of medical tourism.
